Shiny, shimmering, and oh-so-chic! ✨ For our March 5th flower design practice, we challenged our members to “Put a Little Glitz in Your Life” by creating stunning metallic arrangements.

The requirement was to go bold and try for at least 60% of the display featuring a metallic element—whether through polished containers or creatively painted foliage. From sleek silver vessels to foil leaves that caught every bit of light, the results were absolutely dazzling. It’s amazing how a little luster can completely transform a bouquet!

Talk about a gourd-geous challenge! 🧡 For our October 2nd flower design practice, the theme was to create an arrangement using any kind of gourd or squash—either as the vessel or integrated into the design.

The creativity was incredible, using everything from Delphinium and Zinnias to Protea and Black-Eyed Susans, all accented by the perfect autumn squash.

“Vernal Pools” presented by The Chewonki Foundation Traveling Natural History Programs at 1:00 PM on February 13th, 2025. The meeting is in Fellowship Hall at the First Congregational Church, 28 High Street, Wiscasset.
This program will help us understand how a wetland that has water for only a few months can have such an important impact on amphibian and invertebrate life cycles.

This event is free to attend and open to the public.

Maine’s Frogs and Toads – January 2, 2025

For our first program of the season, Science Educator Bryce Hach (North Yarmouth Academy) introduced GCW members to Maine’s diverse frogs and toads. Attendees learned to identify their calls and winter survival strategies. A major highlight—Bryce brought live frogs for an up-close look, making the session an unforgettable hands-on experience!

On December 5th GCW members gathered for our annual tradition of spreading holiday cheer!
Members decorated baskets of fresh greens to spruce up local spaces, as well as 70 mugs for Meals-on-Wheels recipients, and an additional 14 mugs for the volunteer drivers!

Free to the public!

Geography and cultural history are pertinent when making garden design decisions, particularly in New England’s unique and diverse landscapes, from river valleys to
rolling fields to narrow, rocky corridors. We will learn how to establish a sense of place and belonging in our Maine gardens. No matter what cultural elements and influences you want to incorporate, this presentation will help you get creative while staying true to a sense of place.

Presented by Irene Brady Barber
Irene is a Registered Horticultural Therapist (HTR), landscape designer, and, horticulturist. Irene managed the Adult Education Program for Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens for more than a decade before moving to private practice and consulting.

“Coastal Birds Project” - Each spring, endangered Piping Plovers and Least Terns return to nest and raise their young on southern Maine beaches. For more than 35 years, Maine Audubon and their partners have worked with local residents, landowners, and visitors to ensure that endangered birds, wildlife, and people can safely share the beach. We will learn about Maine Audubon’s efforts to protect these birds and their habitat.

The Pownalborough Court House Garden

Garden Design Background (text from plaque)
“The Pownalborough Court House Period Garden was designed utilizing a format and plant material commonly found here from 1761 to 1800. Settlers of this period usually patterned their garden after the Tudor style in England, which was based on a medieval plan. The shape was often square or rectangular, with some aspects of symmetry present. Alleys or paths divided the space allowing easy access for planting, weeding and harvesting. Ornamentation was kept to a minimum, and if utilized at all, the form might be a sundial or bee skep. Traditionally, four plant groups were cultivated: vegetables, herbs, flowers (mostly medicinal with perhaps a few ornamentals), and fruit. Before the Revolution, there were not many nurseries as we know them today, so plant material was exchanged from one gardener/farmer to another.
Garden Description
The garden overall is approximately 20’ x 30’ and it incorporates a grape arbor which was commonly found during this time period. At the center of the main section (20’ x 20’) is a 6’ circular area featuring a sundial surrounded by a mix of flowers.
In keeping with the time period, the specific plants initially chosen for this project are primarily utilitarian in nature, with only a few ornamentals that would have been introduced after the Revolution.”

Happy 40th Anniversary GCW!

On June 19th, 1984, just a few weeks after it was organized, the Garden Club of Wiscasset became a member of the Garden Club Federation of Maine!

Forty years later, two of the original Charter Members are still members of GCW. Here’s a special shout-out of gratitude to those members for their leadership, hard work, and inspiration for sticking with us from the beginning to today!

Here’s more! Including pioneers Esther and Patti, a total of six more remaining members joined GCW between 1984-1994. Ten more of our current members joined in our 2nd decade between 1994-2004. Furthermore, between 2004-2014, in our 3rd decade as a club, another fourteen of our remaining members joined. Finally, during our 4th and current decade, 2014-2024, forty-seven more gardeners joined GCW, the vast majority joining after COVID.

This lovely combination of newer members and others bridging decades of experience is very much a part of the magic of the Garden Club of Wiscasset and its growing energy. Let’s take a moment to celebrate the Garden Club of Wiscasset’s 40th anniversary and to thank every one of us for choosing to share the love of gardens and gardening with each other and our community.

In addition to dreaming up the next great things to come, milestones like these provide a wonderful opportunity to reflect on our past endeavors and achievements. With this in mind, the GCW Historian sub-committee aims to research and document notable moments of GCW’s history for posterity.
